About Volunteers of America Transitional Housing for Families

Volunteers of America’s Transitional Housing for Families is a sober living program. They’ve been around since 1896. They have a site located in Mather, California. It’s by Sonoma Park and the Mather Sports Center.

This house offers transitional housing services for families facing homelessness and substance use disorders. The program provides substance use recovery support, employment readiness, life skills development and assistance for moms with children. Their mission is to empower families to rebuild stable, healthy lives in a compassionate family-centered environment.

Sober Housing & Recovery Stability

Participants live in fully furnished 1-, 2-, or 3-bedroom units based on family size and commit to completing or being enrolled in Sacramento County drug treatment programs. The housing stays typically last 12 to 18 months, allowing time to heal and grow.

Treatment includes regular drug testing, case management, and goal planning toward self-sufficiency. Residents attend life skills classes and work with onsite employment specialists to develop job readiness. Support staff are available 24 hours to assist in addressing underlying issues related to addiction, homelessness, and family stress.

Women’s Transitional Living & Reunification Support

As a secondary specialty, their Options Transitional Living (OTL) Program tailored for pregnant women, postpartum women up to one year, and those in the process of child reunification with children aged 12 or younger. This track provides unique support adapted to women’s needs during this critical period.

Services under OTL include focused prenatal or postpartum care coordination, childcare assistance, and guidance through reunification requirements. The sober environment offers mothers stability so they can focus on recovery and rebuilding relationships with their children.
